Chandelier Size Guide

Choosing a chandelier is one of the most impactful lighting decisions you'll make. The right size helps create balance, complements your furniture, and anchors the room. Whether you're selecting a fixture for a dining room, entryway, or open-concept space, a few simple guidelines can help you find the right fit with confidence.

The Room Dimension Rule

Diameter: Add the length and width of your room in feet. That number in inches is your target fixture diameter.

  • 12 x 14 ft room (26 ft combined) = 26 inch chandelier

Height: Allow 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling.

  • 9 ft ceiling = 22 to 27 inch tall fixture
  • In taller rooms, lean toward a more vertical fixture rather than a wide, shallow one

Dining Rooms

Diameter: Target half to two-thirds the width of the table.

  • 72 inch table = 36 to 48 inch chandelier

Hang height: Bottom of the fixture should sit 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop. This keeps light focused on the table without blocking sightlines across it.

Shape: Round tables pair naturally with round fixtures. Rectangular tables can carry either, though a linear or elongated chandelier distributes light more evenly along the length.

Entryways or Stairwells

Clearance: The bottom of the fixture should clear the floor by at least 7 feet.

Scale: In very tall entries, go larger than the room formula suggests. Scale reads differently in vertical spaces, and an undersized chandelier in a grand foyer will look lost.

Open Concept Spaces

Don't apply the room formula to the full footprint. Measure the specific zone the chandelier is meant to anchor (a seating group, a dining area, a kitchen island) and size to that instead.

A chandelier scaled to the zone will read correctly, even if the surrounding space is much larger.
