Wet-Rated Recessed Lights

Wet-rated recessed lights are specialized fixtures commonly used in areas where they will be exposed to moisture.

To be classed as wet-rated, the fixtures must have specialized waterproof seals and gaskets to avoid short-circuiting when coming into contact with water.

What’s the Difference Between Wet-Rated and Damp-Rated?

While both types of recessed lighting are similar, the main difference is that wet–rated recessed lights can safely come into direct contact with water, while damp-rated recessed lights can only withstand moisture and humidity in the air.

It’s important when selecting your fixtures to consider the level of exposure they need to withstand to avoid potential damage to the lights.

Where Do You Need a Wet-Rated Fixture?

Wet-rated recessed lighting can be used in a variety of spaces where moisture can be expected. Wet-rated lighting is commonly used in bathrooms over showers and bathtubs, or in leisure areas above pools or jacuzzi tubs.

They also can be installed in outdoor spaces like covered porches and entryways, provided they have the correct exterior rating as well.

What Else Matters Besides the Rating?

When choosing wet-rated lighting fixtures, it’s also important to consider other technical features to make sure that your selected lighting is appropriate for the location where it’s being installed.

Air-tight certification is also a good consideration to help prevent mold growth and rusting when the installation cavity is exposed to moisture. Corrosion and rust protection can help guarantee the safety and longevity of your lighting.
